Private Collection by Estee Lauder c1973

Launched in 1978, Private Collection by Estée Lauder arrived at a time when the perfume market was dominated by bold, opulent fragrances that often featured heavy, exotic notes. The 1970s were marked by a fascination with rich, complex compositions that highlighted deep florals, spicy elements, and luxurious woods. Fragrances such as Chanel No. 19 and Yves Saint Laurent’s Opium were popular, reflecting an era of both sophistication and flamboyance.

In this context, Private Collection offered a refreshing alternative. Created by Vincent Marcello, it was designed to embody a unique elegance that set it apart from the prevailing trends. With its blend of honeysuckle, jasmine, and citrus in the top notes, it provided a vibrant and lush opening. The heart of orange flower, ylang-ylang, and coriander delivered a refined, exotic floral composition, while the base notes of sandalwood and patchouli grounded it with a subtle, woody depth. This combination was sophisticated yet accessible, combining the fresh floral elements of the time with a nuanced, understated richness.

The name "Private Collection" held significant meaning. Originally crafted as a custom perfume exclusively for Estée Lauder's personal use, it was a reflection of her own refined taste. When asked about her fragrance, she would simply say it was from her "private collection," adding an air of exclusivity and personal touch. The name evoked an image of exclusivity and bespoke luxury, suggesting that this fragrance was not just a product but a personal treasure—a unique scent not widely available and imbued with personal significance.

The term "Private Collection" conjured feelings of intimacy and sophistication. It implied that the fragrance was something rare and precious, reserved for those who sought a distinctive, personalized touch in their scent. This exclusivity was alluring to women who desired a fragrance that conveyed both individuality and elegance, making them feel special and connected to a refined, elite world.

Women responded to Private Collection with appreciation for its balanced elegance and sophistication. It offered a refined floral scent that was both timeless and contemporary, allowing them to experience a touch of luxury and exclusivity. The perfume's unique blend set it apart from other market offerings of the time, making it a memorable choice for those who valued both the artistry and exclusivity of their fragrance.

"All you need is one beautiful drop to know why Estee Lauder was keeping Private Collection fragrance for herself."

Fragrance Composition:

So what does it smell like? The original formula  for Private Collection is classified as green floral chypre fragrance for women. "An opulent, dramatic floral blending rose, honeysuckle, jasmine, bergamot and brilliant green notes with orange blossom, ylang ylang and coriander. Luxurious background blends sandalwood and patchouli." Made up of over 200 ingredients including some of the rarest and most expensive absolutes, reportedly not one of them was synthetic.
  • Top notes: Luxonne violet, green accord, bergamot, hyacinth, lime, neroli, mimosa, Lebanon cassie
  • Middle notes: Bulgarian damask rose, Grasse rose de mai, Grasse jasmine, narcissus, pine needle, reseda, orange blossom, Nossi-Be ylang ylang, honeysuckle
  • Base notes: Thailand benzoin, oakmoss, Haiti vetiver, cedar, musk, amber, Ceylon sandalwood, heliotrope, Cyprus labdanum, patchouli, coriander

Scent Profile:

As you take your first breath of the top notes, you're greeted with an invigorating burst of Luxonne violet, a delicate floral that dances lightly on the edge of your senses. It carries a subtle sweetness and a soft powdery touch, enveloping you in a gentle, comforting embrace. Green accord follows, offering a fresh, crisp green fragrance reminiscent of a dewy meadow, full of vitality and verdant lushness. The bergamot then makes its entrance with a zesty, citrusy brilliance that tingles your senses with its bright and uplifting aroma.

The scent is both tart and sweet, with a sparkling freshness. Hyacinth adds a lush, green floral dimension, infusing the air with its rich, sweet, and slightly aquatic fragrance. Lime comes next, its sharp and tangy notes cutting through the blend with a vibrant citrus edge. Neroli contributes a soft, honeyed floral aroma, imbued with a hint of bitterness that adds complexity. Mimosa introduces a warm, powdery floral note with its sunny, golden scent that hints at the softness of springtime. Finally, cassie from Lebanon provides a unique, slightly woody and spicy floral fragrance, adding an exotic touch that intrigues and captivates.

As the top notes begin to fade, the heart of the fragrance reveals itself. The Bulgarian damask rose blooms with its opulent, velvety aroma, rich and full-bodied, with a deep, romantic quality that envelops you in its luxurious scent. Rose de mai from Grasse adds another layer of elegance with its honeyed, complex floral notes, blending seamlessly with the damask rose and creating a bouquet that is both rich and delicate. The jasmine, also from Grasse, brings a heady, exotic aroma, its intoxicating sweetness and creamy texture creating a sense of opulence and indulgence.

Narcissus contributes a green, earthy floral note with its fresh, slightly metallic edge, adding depth and intrigue. Pine needle imparts a crisp, resinous scent, evoking the refreshing aroma of a pine forest with its green, invigorating notes. Reseda adds a subtle, green floral aspect with a hint of warmth and sweetness. Orange blossom introduces a radiant, floral sweetness with a touch of citrus, enhancing the overall floral bouquet. The Nossi-Be ylang ylang offers a rich, exotic floral scent with its creamy, slightly fruity undertones, adding a lush and sensual dimension. Honeysuckle concludes the heart notes with its sweet, honeyed aroma, full of warmth and nostalgia, blending effortlessly with the other florals.

As the fragrance settles, the base notes come to the forefront. Thai Benzoin provides a sweet, resinous warmth, with its rich, vanilla-like scent that envelops you in a cozy, comforting embrace. Oakmoss adds a deep, earthy quality with its green, woody notes, grounding the fragrance with its rich, forest-like aroma. Haitian vetiver introduces a smoky, woody depth with its earthy, slightly leathery scent, creating a sophisticated and complex base. Cedar adds a dry, woody note with a subtle hint of resin, enhancing the fragrance's depth and structure.

Musk contributes a warm, animalic touch with its soft, sensual scent, adding a layer of richness and allure. Amber offers a golden, resinous warmth, with its rich, sweet, and slightly powdery aroma that lingers seductively. Ceylonese sandalwood provides a creamy, smooth, and woody note with its deep, exotic scent, adding a luxurious and grounding base. Heliotrope adds a powdery, slightly almond-like sweetness, blending seamlessly with the other base notes. Labdanum from Cyprus contributes a rich, resinous, and slightly leathery aroma, enhancing the fragrance's depth and complexity. Patchouli introduces an earthy, woody quality with its rich, musky scent, adding a touch of mystery and intensity. Finally, coriander offers a spicy, slightly citrusy note, adding a final layer of complexity and intrigue to the fragrance.

Bottle:

The Parfum was presented with an elegance that reflected Estee Lauder's refined taste. The first touch was the delicate parchment writing paper, an artisanal wrapping that conveyed a sense of old-world charm and meticulous care. The paper itself was slightly textured, lending a tactile richness to the experience, and its soft, creamy hue hinted at the luxury contained within. Each package was secured with a ribbon in Estee Lauder’s favorite shade of blue—a vibrant, yet sophisticated color that added a personal touch to the presentation. This ribbon was tied with precision, its ends falling gracefully, adding a final, stylish flourish to the already luxurious wrapping.

Inside this refined outer layer, the Parfum was cradled in a drawstring leather bag, crafted from supple leather that had a subtle sheen. This bag was not only functional but also added an additional layer of luxury and protection to the precious bottle. The leather, soft to the touch, was meticulously stitched, hinting at the craftsmanship that went into creating this special packaging. The drawstring closure was adorned with small, elegant metal tips that clinked softly, adding a gentle sound of opulence to the unwrapping ritual.

The frosted crystal decanter that held the Parfum was a masterpiece in itself, designed to echo Estee Lauder's own antique flask. Its frosted surface had a cloudy translucence, giving it an almost ethereal quality. The crystal, though not as clear as polished glass, was imbued with a sense of timeless elegance. The design of the decanter was both classic and distinctive, featuring intricate, yet understated details that captured the essence of vintage sophistication.

Contrary to some descriptions that you might find online, the bottle was indeed made in France, but it was not created by Lalique. Instead, it was crafted by a different esteemed French glassmaker, whose expertise in crystal artistry ensured that the bottle’s design was executed with the same level of craftsmanship and attention to detail. The result was a decanter that exuded both elegance and exclusivity, perfectly complementing the luxurious fragrance it contained.

The Parfum was elegantly presented in a range of sizes, each housed in a distinctive frosted glass bottle that exuded understated luxury. The largest size, 1 oz. (30 ml), featured a substantial frosted decanter with a glass stopper that added a touch of classic sophistication. The glass stopper, with its smooth, polished surface, was precisely fitted to seal in the fragrance, ensuring its freshness and potency. This bottle’s generous size allowed for a luxurious pour and was designed to be both practical and decorative.

The 0.5 oz. (15 ml) size was slightly smaller but maintained the same elegant design as the larger bottle. It also came with a glass stopper, offering the same level of refinement and functionality. This mid-sized bottle was perfect for those who wanted a more portable option while still enjoying the opulence of the frosted glass.

The 0.25 oz. (7.5 ml) bottle, though smaller, continued the tradition of elegance with its glass stopper. This size was ideal for those who preferred a compact option without compromising on the luxurious presentation. The frosted glass of this bottle was delicately detailed, reflecting the light in a subtle, shimmering manner.

The smallest size, 0.09 oz. (3 ml), was presented as a miniature with a plastic stopper. Although smaller and more practical for travel or collection, the plastic stopper was designed to ensure the fragrance was well-protected. The miniature bottle retained the frosted glass appearance, though its size and stopper were adapted for convenience rather than luxury.

In addition to these sizes, an 11" tall frosted glass factice bottle was available, intended primarily for display purposes. This larger decanter, while similar in design to the standard bottles, was filled with colored water rather than actual perfume. Its size and visual impact made it a striking decorative piece, often found in perfume displays or collections. The frosted finish of the factice bottle mirrored the elegance of the smaller bottles, while the colored water added a touch of visual intrigue without the practical function of holding perfume.

Limited Edition Collector's Bottle:

The limited edition Collector's Bottle was a striking testament to artisanal craftsmanship, distinguished by its unique design and luxurious materials. Crafted from both clear and frosted glass, the bottle showcased an exquisite interplay of transparency and opacity. The clear glass portion allowed a glimpse of the fragrance within, subtly catching the light and enhancing the visual allure of the Parfum. The frosted glass, with its soft, ethereal quality, complemented the clear section, adding depth and sophistication to the overall design.

The standout feature of this collector's bottle was its frosted glass stopper, sculpted into a dramatic shape reminiscent of flames. This distinctive stopper, with its intricate detailing, created a dynamic visual impact, as if the bottle were capturing a moment of fiery elegance. The flames were rendered with a careful balance of texture and smoothness, blending seamlessly with the bottle's frosted finish and adding an element of high drama and exclusivity.

Despite its French origin and the high level of craftsmanship, the bottle was not produced by Lalique, as some might assume. Instead, it was created by another esteemed French glassmaker renowned for their artistry. This choice of maker ensured that the bottle maintained its luxurious quality and uniqueness, making it a coveted item among collectors and enthusiasts alike. The combination of clear and frosted glass, along with the flame-shaped stopper, created a bottle that was not only functional but also a stunning piece of decorative art.

Limited Edition Purse Bottle:

The precious purse bottle, inspired by the flame-shaped stopper from the earlier limited edition, was a dazzling addition to the collection. Crafted from frosted glass, the bottle captured the essence of the original design, with a sleek, elegant form that subtly echoed the flame motif. Its delicate, frosted texture lent the bottle a soft, luminous quality, reminiscent of the ethereal beauty of the earlier design.

Measuring approximately 3" long x 1.25" wide, the bottle was compact yet refined, perfectly sized for a luxurious accessory. It held 7 ml of parfum, a small but elegant quantity that made it ideal for carrying in a purse or clutch. The bottle's gold-tone screw cap added a touch of opulence, beautifully complementing the frosted glass. This cap was designed to mimic the flame's dynamic shape, though rendered in a sleek, smooth gold that highlighted its sophisticated design.

At the end of the screw cap, a silky tassel added a final flourish of glamour. The tassel, soft and flowing, provided a gentle contrast to the sleek metal, enhancing the bottle's tactile appeal and adding an element of playful luxury.

The bottle was housed in a beige leather pouch, a chic and practical accessory that protected the delicate glass while adding an extra layer of elegance. The leather pouch was crafted with care, its soft, supple texture and neutral color providing a sophisticated backdrop for the precious bottle inside. This combination of frosted glass, gold accents, and a silky tassel created a purse bottle that was both functional and a statement piece, embodying the perfect blend of artistry and luxury.

Spray Bottles:

The spray bottles for the Parfum were designed with a streamlined elegance, featuring frosted glass that offered a subtle, textured appearance. Each bottle, holding 3/8 oz of Parfum, was compact yet functional, perfectly suited for those who preferred the convenience of a spray application. The frosted glass not only provided a luxurious visual appeal but also allowed the user to gauge the remaining amount of fragrance with a soft, diffuse glow. The spray mechanism was finely crafted to deliver a fine mist, ensuring an even distribution of the perfume. This practical design combined with the understated sophistication of the frosted glass made these spray bottles a stylish and functional addition to the Parfum collection, ideal for both daily use and elegant travel.

Holiday Gift Sets:

In the 1980s, Estee Lauder introduced a series of enchanting Holiday gift sets that quickly became cherished collectibles. These sets, known as Keepsake Boxes, combined the elegance of fragrance with the allure of beautifully crafted containers. Each set featured a bottle of Parfum housed in a distinctive glass or ceramic box, making the presentation as special as the fragrance itself.

The glass boxes were designed with a refined touch, their clear surfaces often adorned with intricate patterns or delicate etchings that captured and refracted light, adding a touch of sparkle to the holiday season. These boxes, with their smooth, polished edges and elegant shapes, were not just functional but also served as decorative accents. They could be repurposed as elegant storage for trinkets or mementos long after the fragrance was enjoyed.

In contrast, the ceramic boxes offered a classic charm with their robust, often hand-painted designs. These boxes featured rich, glossy finishes or matte textures, and were frequently adorned with festive motifs or intricate detailing that echoed the spirit of the holidays. The ceramic boxes, with their sturdy construction and artistic embellishments, provided a sense of timelessness and were designed to be keepsakes in their own right.

Each Keepsake Box was meticulously crafted to complement the luxurious Parfum inside, transforming a simple gift into a treasured memory. The combination of high-quality fragrance and exquisite packaging made these holiday sets highly sought after, reflecting Estee Lauder’s commitment to blending beauty with thoughtful elegance.

The Estee Lauder Private Collection Keepsake Box shown above is a stunning example of holiday elegance and craftsmanship. Measuring 4" high, 2.75" wide, and 2" thick, this box combines functionality with opulent design. The box is made of frosted glass, which lends it a soft, ethereal quality, while intricate gold stenciled designs decorate its surface with delicate patterns that catch and reflect light beautifully. These designs add a touch of sophistication and enhance the overall luxury of the Keepsake Box.

The top of the box is ingeniously designed to open on a back hinge, which allows for smooth and effortless access. It is secured by a floral clasp on the front, a charming detail that complements the ornate design of the box. The top and bottom of the Keepsake Box are elegantly trimmed with beaded gold-tone oval frames, adding a touch of glamour and a sense of refinement to the overall appearance.

The bottom of the box is marked with a special inscription: "Created in Japan especially for Estee Lauder Private Collection Keepsake Boxes", highlighting its bespoke nature and the care taken in its creation.

Inside this exquisite box rests a bottle of Private Collection Parfum, encased in a tan leather pouch. The pouch, tied with a grosgrain ribbon, adds a further layer of elegance and protection to the precious fragrance. The bottle itself is marked on the bottom with: "Private Collection Estee Lauder Dist New York, New York 1002.25 FL OZ Bottle Made in France", indicating both the fragrance’s origins and its luxurious French craftsmanship. The combination of the Keepsake Box and the carefully wrapped Parfum bottle creates a beautifully coordinated gift set that exemplifies the elegance and attention to detail characteristic of Estee Lauder's offerings.

Fate of the Fragrance:

Private Collection has experienced several reformulations over the years, leading to noticeable changes in its fragrance profile. Initially, the perfume was celebrated for its complex and rich composition, which included ingredients now restricted or banned, such as oakmoss. These elements contributed to its lush, deep character, offering a more nuanced and opulent experience. However, the current formula, while still capturing some of the essence of the original, lacks the depth and richness of its predecessor due to the limitations imposed on certain ingredients.

As of 2024, Estee Lauder continues to offer Private Collection on their website. Despite the changes in formulation, the fragrance remains classified as a green floral fragrance for women. It retains its core identity with fresh, verdant notes blended with floral elements, though the overall scent profile may be less robust compared to its earlier iterations. The enduring presence of Private Collection on Estee Lauder's website reflects its lasting appeal and the continued interest of those who appreciate its refined, albeit evolved, character.

  • Top notes: honeysuckle, jasmine, citrus
  • Middle notes: orange flower, ylang-ylang, coriander
  • Base notes: sandalwood, patchouli

Scent Profile:

The modern version retains honeysuckle and jasmine, but the citrus component may be less pronounced or have changed in character due to adjustments in ingredient availability and formulation practices. While orange flower and ylang-ylang are still present, coriander may be used in a more subdued manner or replaced by other aromatic elements due to restrictions on some spices and botanicals. This shift could affect the overall floral-spicy balance. The current formula still includes sandalwood and patchouli, but the quality and intensity of these notes might be altered due to the use of synthetic substitutes or changes in the formulation to comply with modern regulations. The deep, earthy richness of patchouli and the creamy warmth of sandalwood may be less pronounced compared to the original.

Overall, the shift in formulation reflects changes in ingredient restrictions and evolving fragrance practices. While the current Private Collection maintains the essence of its original identity, the absence of certain traditional materials and the introduction of modern alternatives result in a fragrance that, though still elegant, differs in depth and complexity from the original 1973 formula.
